Maintaining a Clay Court after Opening for the Season
Roll court frequently:
Spring rains and ground moisture will keep the court soft. Rolling is required three to five times per week
Do not play or attempt to roll court after rain:
Allow court to dry out in order to roll without damaging surface or lines. Courts can take from a half day to as much as two days to dry out after a prolonged rain.
Roll lines in to surface prior to rolling entire court:
When court is soft from rain the roller will shove the lines in the direction the roller is traveling
Rolling the lines: use your hand roller to roll the lines lengthwise to secure the tapes and nails into the surface.
Necessary equipment and supplies to maintain clay courts
- Hand roller
- Power roller
- Drag brooms (2)
- Line sweepers (2)
- Aussie clean sweep
- Broadcast spreader
- Calcium chloride or magnesium chloride
- Ortho ground clear- weed control
- Ortho max-insect control
- Scarifer lute
- Sprayer
Playing on the court when it is not firm enough (rolled) or when it is wet will cause lines to become crooked and create a build up of top dressing under the
lines causing the lines to lift and become a tripping hazzard.
